Dorm room essentials

Dear Incoming Freshman,

Today I want to share about a very important subject matter…drumroll please…dorm room necessities! As you probably are wrapping up and last minute shopping in preparation for your dorm hall move in, I wanted to share some of my top necessities I recommend for any good dorm room!

First of all, I want to start with an item that is sometimes overlooked

  1. A Brita water filter

Coming into college, I did not understand the extent to which I would use our Brita. This will save you numerous trips to your nearest water fountain. Besides, we stand hydration!!

  1. A drying rack to hang up wet clothes

Guys. I can not stress this one enough. The amount of times in the beginning of the year where I would have to lay my wet clothes out on the bed or in random places around the room. This comes in clutch ladies for hanging drying your more delicate items.

  1. A wall plug in/room spray

We all know that the dorm rooms are not the largest things in the world, and with this being said…they can get quite stinky. My roommate and I got a cheap wall plug in, and it worked wonders:) Everyone would always mention in when they walked in.

  1. Slippers

I know. I know what you are thinking…who would not already pack slippers. BUT hear me out…I highly recommend a DURABLE, waterproof pair of slippers. This comes in handy on those mornings when you roll out of bed late and attend your 8am in pjs (we have all been there!)

  1. A small fan

You. Guys. A small fan that you can set on your desk and by your bed is so stinking nice. Sometimes dorms can get stuffy, and AC will go out on occasions, so believe me when I say you will want a fan! Also, they perform excellent background noise.

  1. A snack drawer

Not only will this be the best thing for you to come home to after a long day of class, but your friends will love all the time spent in your room:)

  1. Long phone chargern

This comes in exxtrrraaa handy if you stay in a dorm with lofted beds!!

  1. Lamps/fairy lights

Ladies, I can not emphasize how much I love my lamps. There is nothing that can make a space feel more homey than a good rug and a fun lamp! (Insider hack get warm lightbulbs) Lamps warm up the room, and they are so much better than the fluorescent lights in the rooms.

  1. Eye mask

This is a big one if you have a roommate that stays up a lot later or wakes up a lot earlier than you!

  1. A white noise sound machine

I know there are apps for this, so call me old. BUT! I love a good sound machine!!!

OK girls, I hope this was helpful in some way!! Dorm life is truly one of the best, most memorable experiences!!! I just encourage you to treasure this time, and trust that everything happens for a reason. Freshman year is one full of challenges and growth. Just know that you are loved:)))

With love,

Parrish Rothman PC ’22
